The mountainous area around Steeljag bluff is an extremely fertile stretch of land with plenty of volcanic soil. But getting closer to Ember Summit, the shade from the volcano's smoke plume leads to a desolate desert-like area where nothing grows. Seismic activity, high winds and lava flows has led to sharp and jagged teeth-like rock formations in an area called Shade Valley.
This intimidating path up to the Volcano has long had a history of ghost stories, ranging from stories of fallen heroes to old Kessi soldiers and citizens. One thing is for certain: This dark area, shrouded from flying type surveillance, is a hotbed for criminals.
Originally the home base of the pickpocket gang, the recent occupants and owners of Steeljag village have recently worked with the Arceali guild to clear out the criminal outposts and bases that were festering here at the base of Ember Summit. The land has thusly been purchased for development by Garrius Molaene Holdings and Investments to be used by The Merrikus Steel Mill. A few new lava-based fire smelters have already been built, utilizing the lava flows from Ember Summit to produce high-temperature steel. Currently, this steel is sold only for development and construction, as The Merrikus Steel Mill does not take Conduicy contracts for military development.
Despite the recent developments, the old ghost stories of Shade Valley still remain. An old Illaminian tale of 'white faces' hiding in the dark was brought from the west and have become commonplace among workers of Shade Valley. Other stories include hearing the screams of fallen ancient explorers, figures in the dark. The perpetual darkness of this area frequently plays tricks on the workers.
